Joseph Matthew Death & Obituary: Kingsport, TN — The Kingsport community and the United States Coast Guard are mourning the loss of Joseph Matthew Hanh Cox, who tragically passed away on Sunday, December 8, 2024, at the age of 24. Joseph’s life, though far too short, was marked by his deep sense of service, dedication, and love for his family, friends, and country.

A Life Dedicated to Service and Excellence

Born and raised in Kingsport, Tennessee, Joseph graduated in 2019 from Sullivan North High School. His passion for service and leadership was evident from a young age, and after high school, he attended the Marion Military Institute before continuing his studies at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Joseph’s commitment to excellence and his desire to serve led him to enlist in the United States Coast Guard, where he proudly served, including a tour in Bahrain.

Joseph received numerous accolades for his service, including the Armed Forces Service Medal, Global War on Terror Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Coast Guard Good Conduct Medal. A Committed Volunteer and Community Leader

In addition to his military service, Joseph was an active member of his local community. He served as a volunteer firefighter and EMT, always ready to lend a helping hand in times of need. He took great pride in contributing to the safety and well-being of those around him.

A Loving Family Man and Friend

Joseph’s deep love for his family was one of the defining aspects of his life. He was a devoted son to Wayne and Beverly Cox, a cherished brother to Erika, and a beloved grandson to his maternal grandmother, Dorothy Mann. His family remembers him as a kind, compassionate, and genuine person who put others before himself. Joseph’s joyful spirit and warm heart made a lasting impact on everyone he encountered.

Funeral and Memorial Services

Joseph is preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Robert “Don” Mann, paternal grandparents Tom and Vickie Cox, and paternal grandmother Veronia Cox. His passing is deeply mourned by his family, friends, and community, but his legacy of service, love, and kindness will continue to live on.

A visitation will be held for family and friends on Thursday, December 19, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Lynn Garden Baptist Church. A funeral service will follow at 7:00 p.m., officiated by Pastor Rick Meade and Pastor Anthony Gragg.

A military graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 20, 2024, at Mountain Home National Cemetery, where Joseph will be honored with full military honors by the U.S. Coast Guard. Family and friends are invited to gather at the cemetery by 10:50 a.m. to pay their respects.

A Lasting Legacy

Joseph’s untimely passing leaves a void that can never be filled, but his memory will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. His dedication to service, his love for others, and his unwavering commitment to his community and country will be remembered and cherished by those who loved him.
